Will FCA be a going concern long enough for this to come to fruition?  It’d better be a Joop factory.

According to glassdoor the national average for an FCA assembly-line worker is $20/h. That's probably pretty good in Detroit, especially for new workers, no?

What does this have to do with tariffs?

The tariffs hurt Volvo building luxury SUVs in Charleston, BMW building luxury SUVs in Spartanburg, and Mercedes building luxury SUVs in Tuscaloosa—but not FCA in Detroit.

Yup, a few of us still live there! (or at least in the Detroit Metro Area.)

I’m not saying that FCA is quietly becoming the best American automaker, making some of the best quality products...oh wait I am. They are currently the best American automaker.

In all seriousness, it’s good news, for now. But where the tariffs will really hit are the suppliers and subassemblies. It’s nice to say you’ve gotten local sourcing for your components right up until your end customer doesn’t care and goes with what is cheapest.

We just switched suppliers of some bottles and caps to American plants because we were having communication and supply issues with the chinese firm we were working with. Which is good, but, the customer we make these products for is currently kicking up a storm and wants tot ake their business elsewhere. Granted, they were the ones that demanded the custom bottle in the first place, but some people’s children never really learned their multiplicati on tables all that well so I’m not surprised.

Overall, I think it has less to do with the tariffs themselves and more on how it was handled. Th is was an ugly, ugly couple of weeks and has repercussions that the highest of the high don’t understand while the people at ground level knew all too well. Also, as a Michigan resident and someone who grew up in the southeast Michigan area, it’s rather sad to say this but there is a good chance that plant will be gone in 20 years and never really give the boost to the area that it promises.

GM’s Orion assembly only makes the sonic and the bolt so there’s a good chance that after less than 40 years, it’ll be done soon. Grand River assembly in Lansing is kinda.....yeeesh. Ford’s plants in Michigan are in a bit of flux too. Wixom was stopped in the mid 2000s after about 50 years. The Woodhaven plants are probably next. FCA’s sterling assembly has been underutilized for YEARS and that was the plant I was closest to, physically.

Of course I was joking, but seriously I’ve always been sad for Detroit. I always thought it and its people  deserved more than it’s become.  I’ve read that there’s a bit of a renaissance trying to bloom.  I hope it succeeds.

there is nothing that states this is a direct result of tariffs...it’s not a “win” for your boy...it’s someone else’ s work.

Included in the state package is a $105 million “Good Jobs” incentive, which lets companies keep all or half of the income taxes associated with new jobs for up to 10 years, if the jobs pay at least the regional average. That accounts for more than half the maximum $200 million available under the program.

I think it sucks that large companies have to be blackmailed into giving “ regional average wages” .

What does this have to do with tariffs?

You can have some good things among other bad things. Okay, Detroit is getting a new plant, that’s good! Oh but farmers need a $16B assistance package because ta riffs are killing their business. Yay?

Nobody will admit that the Chicken Tax is a net positive for the US. Every furriner truck & SUV sold in the US is made in a plant in the US as a result of it.

Also, the auto industry as a whole is forecasted to recede over the next 3-5 yrs. All of the bigger manufacturers are in cost cutting mode right now as a result. While this announcement is a positive, it’s offset by layoffs in other areas.

It depends on how we define American automaker these days. 4 of the top 10 cars in Cars.com’s “American Index” for 2018 were Hondas

I define by company home (in this case, the Chrysler half of the FCA alliance). They might make Hondas and Toyotas here, but they’re still Japanese cars.

I see them like I see Ferrari: they have lots of models I’d love to drive or play with for a weekend but not own.
